Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) can significantly enhance the user experience by offering app-like features such as offline capabilities, push notifications, and home screen installation. If you’re running a social media site on the Sngine platform, this guide will walk you through the process of converting it into a PWA.

Let’s get started and get our hands dirty

Prerequisites

Before starting, ensure you have:

1. Access to your Sngine website files and hosting environment.
2. Basic knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
3. SSL/TLS enabled on your website (PWAs require HTTPS).

Step 1: Create a Manifest File

The manifest.json file is crucial for defining your PWA’s appearance and behavior. Place this file in the root directory of your Sngine installation.

To generate PWA icons easily, use online tools such as RealFaviconGenerator or PWA Builder. These tools create icons in the necessary sizes and provide configuration details.

Step 2: Add a Service Worker

Service workers enable offline functionality and caching for your PWA. Create a file named service-worker.js in the root directory and use the Workbox library for easier implementation.

Step 3: Link the Manifest and Service Worker

Add the following code for the manifest.json and icons to the section of your Sngine’s main HTML file (usually found in the _head.tpl file):

Step 4: Test Your PWA

1. Inspect the Manifest: Open your website in Chrome. Right-click and select “Inspect.” Go to the “Application” tab and check the “Manifest” section.
2. Verify Service Worker: In the “Application” tab, check if the service worker is active.
3. Install the PWA: Use Chrome’s “Install” option (available in the address bar) to verify that your PWA installs and works as expected.

Step 5: Enable Push Notifications (Optional)

I don’t use push notifications yet, as I prefer to avoid Firebase because I don’t like it. Currently, I’m still experimenting with self-hosted solutions like Parse Server and Airship Open Source. I will share my findings in a future article.

If you want to add push notifications with Firebase you can do it like this:

1. Use Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) as your push notification service.
2. Update your service-worker.js to handle incoming push events.

3. Use the FCM SDK to send push notifications to users.

Step 6: Monitor and Optimize
